ELMERI

ELMERI is an easy to use and reliable method to evaluate the safety level of a work place. The ELMERI method is based on observation of all the notable safety and health aspects of the physical work environment, and of safety behaviour.

The observations are focused into the following main item groups:

  • Safety behaviour
  • Order and tidiness
  • Machine safety
  • Industrial hygiene
  • Ergonomics
  • Walkways
  • First aid and fire safety

How does the method work?

All item groups are observed at the work station with the help of observation form. The item is assessed to be either correct or not correct. The item is scored as ‘correct’ if it meets the minimum safety standards and good work place practices defined in the ELMERI observation rules. Otherwise the item is scored as ‘not correct’.

There is also a ‘no observation’ column on the observation form. A ‘no observation’ mark is given if the item can not be scored during the inspection, or the observer is not sure how to score it. Special investigations, e.g. industrial hygiene measurements, may be needed in some cases before the assessment can be done.

Safety index calculation

The ELMERI safety index can be calculated when all the selected work stations have been observed. The safety index is calculated as a percentage of the correct items of all observed items.

                                       correct observations
ELMERI index = ----------------------------------------  x  100 (%)
                            correct + not correct observations
