The ATEX Forum is co-ordinated by the EHSQ of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. Together with its co-operative partners, it creates and disseminates solutions for the development of operating processes and work communities from a comprehensive perspective.
The ATEX Forum is based on the principles of trust and learning together and is a network consisting of specialists and authorities that process and disseminate knowledge to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), citizens, and supervisory authorities on the application of the ATEX Directive. The name ATEX comes from the French term 'atmosphères explosibles' - potentially explosive atmospheres.
Explosions and flash fires can have serious human, environmental and financial consequences for SMEs. These enterprises and consumers are often lack the ability to recognize potential danger situations that may result in fires and explosions.
Activities
- Improving the understanding, processing and dissemination of information on ATEX to citizens and supervisory authorities
- Advice on drawing up an explosion protection document for SMEs where flammable liquids, gases or dusts pose a fire or explosion hazard
- Disseminating information about risk management and good safety practices regarding fire and explosive air mixtures via the internet
- Safety audits
- Seminars, training, guides
Aims of the ATEX Forum
The main aims of the Forum are the improvement of general safety in SMEs; the prevention of explosions and fires caused by explosive dust/vapour/gas - air mixtures; the prevention of personal harm and environmental and property damage; and promoting discussion between legislators, supervisory authorities, owners of SMEs, and citizens on topics related to ATEX.
A diverse network of experts
Participants in the ATEX Forum: AEL - the Centre for Technical Training in Finland, TUKES - the Safety Technology Authority, Ministry of Health and Social Affairs/Occupational Safety, Fire and Rescue Authorities, the Emergency Services College, SPEK - the Fire Officers' Union, and the insurance companies Fennia, If, Tapiola and Pohjola.
