African Project Evaluation
The main implementation phase of the Training and Information Project for African Countries on Occupational Safety and Health is being currently evaluated. Selected countries have already been visited by the evaluation team consisting of Dr. Matti Lamberg from the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, team leader and evaluator in charge of occupational health questions, and Prof. Markku Mattila from the Tampere University of Technology, responsible for occupational safety questions of the evaluation. Both of them have been nominated by the donor, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland while the ILO representative has been Dr. Jukka Takala, Chief of the ILO's International Occupational Safety and Health Information Centre, CIS. The evaluation report should be ready for the next issue of the Newsletter, so we will say more about it then.
Safety and Health Information on INTERNET
A lot of information is already available through INTERNET. The latest developments include new homepages that have been established by a number of institutions. These homepages can be read by those who have access to the World Wide Web and have a web browser, such as the Mosaic or Netscape software. Usually homepages describe what information is available within or through the institution concerned, and provide links, so called hypertext links, to further information within the institutions computerized network, or - and more importantly - to related information anywhere in the world. The homepage acts as a menu to find occupational safety and health information which can be decentralized and may be located in different countries and continents.
The following homepages are useful to start: ILO's International Occupational Safety and Health Information Centre: http://turva.me.tut.fi/cis/home.html The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health http://www.occuphealth.fi List of Occupational Safety and Health Resources, Tampere University of Technology http://turva.me.tut.fi/~tuusital/oshlinks.html Many CIS National Centres have already such homepages. More information on the subject will be given in coming issues.
CIS Network Annual Meeting
The CIS National Centres' Annual Meeting will take place on 22 June, 1995 at the ILO Headquarters, in connection of the annual International Labour Conference in Geneva. The preceding day, 21 June, will be a voluntary training day on latest developments in information dissemination, such as the INTERNET. All CIS National and Collaborating Centres are welcome, and observers from potential centres and conference delegates may also take part, provided that they inform CIS of their intentions in advance.
