The majority of institute R&D is applied research with results that can be utilized directly. Other research aims to generate long-term effects by examining such phenomena as the mechanics behind work-related illnesses and the challenges and opportunities of future work conditions.

FIOH benefits from its in-house multi-disciplinary expertise and cooperative networks as it develops its areas of specialisation. FIOH researchers actively participate in a variety of international research projects in the European Union and throughout the world.
