Managing socially sustainable digital and AI transformation by the means of co-evaluation between technology developer and user organizations (MANAGE-AI)

Objectives
Digital and AI-based tools are changing work. To date, ethical assessments made in connection with the adoption of technology have focused mainly on the perspectives of customers and end users and less on the overall consequences for work. There is a need to evaluate the impacts of technology on employees' tasks, working practices, work organisation and skills. The research supports Business Finland's Healthcare Reimagined 2035 mission.
The objectives of the project are
- to study, assess and anticipate the work-related impacts of digital and AI innovations in health and social care sector.
- to help developer and user organisations anticipate the diverse impacts of AI and digital innovations on working life.
- to increase the understanding of technology developers and adopters of the requirements of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act and how to assess the social sustainability of innovation.
- to produce information on the impacts of the digital and artificial intelligence revolution on working life and evaluation practices for wider use in working life.
The project will result in the creation of a new research-based assessment tool (process and assessment framework) to support the development, management and implementation of artificial intelligence and digital innovations in the health and social sector and more broadly in working life.
Data and methods
The research method consists of case studies of innovations in developer and user organisations. Data collection methods include surveys, interviews, observation of implementation situations and participatory evaluation workshops in which the evaluation method under development is tested.
Results and impact
The project will result in the creation of a co-evaluation model (MANAGE-AI) as a joint practice for technology developers and organisations operating in health and social care, which supports the adoption of technological experiments and innovations by co-evaluating their broad impacts, including ethics and social sustainability.
The co-evaluation practice created by the project will promote and accelerate the adoption processes of new AI and digital innovations and help identify barriers to the use of solutions, bottlenecks and unintended consequences. The project will also promote learning between technology companies and user organisations.
Social and ethical sustainability and the coordination of work and technologies are important competitive factors and values, which will become increasingly important in the future as digital and artificial intelligence solutions continue to grow. The solution supports the scaling and dissemination of AI and digital innovations both domestically and internationally.
