Exposure control in asbestos demolition work and description of control measures in the form of instruction cards
Objectives
The aim of the study is to provide information on methods for effectively managing asbestos exposure. Another aim is to prepare instruction cards that provide detailed instructions on how to carry out demolition work so that exposure to asbestos is kept to a minimum in order to prevent health hazards.
Data and methods
Our research focuses on work tasks that are estimated in advance to cause the most exposure to asbestos in demolition work. We carry out before-and-after studies by first examining demolition work as it is carried out in accordance with current practice. Then, we will study the same work using more effective asbestos exposure control measures.
The study employs occupational hygiene measurements to determine asbestos and dust concentrations in the air during demolition. We collect both stationary and personal samples.
Results and impact
The instruction cards drawn up in the study help reduce employees’ exposure to asbestos and health hazards. We draw up instruction cards in collaboration with demolition companies, labour market organisations, occupational safety and health authorities and legislators. In addition to companies carrying out asbestos demolition work and their employees, the cards can also be used by companies that commission asbestos demolition work as well as the occupational safety and health authority.
