Fair work on platforms – REITA

Digital platforms are changing not only work itself but how people find employment. We study platform-mediated work, in which platforms serve as marketplaces for people who perform work and people who buy work performances. Which kinds of operating models do platform companies use in their operations in Finland? How do workers perceive the fairness of their work and how can the fairness of platform work be promoted?

Objectives

Platform work creates flexibility and expands the markets of performers and buyers of work but also entails risks and weaknesses.  By looking into how fairness is built, REITA’s goal is to investigate how the negative effects of platform work can be reduced without losing the benefits of the platform economy. In this research project, fairness refers to, among other things, responsibility, transparency, learning opportunities and the fair distribution of benefits. Fairness is linked to workers’ health, well-being and working careers and is important for the development of the platform economy and the welfare society.

Project execution

  1. In the first phase of the REITA project, the operating models of platform companies operating in Finland are charted.
  2. An analysis of how fairness is built is conducted in both these operating models and in the experiences of platform workers using qualitative interviews as a research tool.
  3. The project gathers together a network of parties interested in the fairness of platform work. The network will plan and assess practices and rules for promoting fairness.
