Neurodiversity in work life – solutions for workplaces to promote sustainable careers (NEMO)
Objectives
Neurodiversity in work life is still a topic that has been studied relatively little, and workplaces lack research-based practical guidance and applicable data.
Neurodiversity refers to differences in how the brain and nervous system function, for example in learning and processing sensory information. In work life, these differences may appear as challenges or strengths. These characteristics vary across the general population and sometimes specific groups are referred to as neurominorities (e.g. people with ADHD, on the autism spectrum or with learning difficulties). Approximately 15–20 per cent of the population belong to a neurominority.
The NEMO project aims to
- obtain information about the work life experiences of neurominorities and how the needs of neurominorities have already been met at workplaces
- increase the competence of workplaces in taking neurodiversity into account in everyday work
- improve the ability to take into account the needs of neurominorities in recruitment
- promote diversity and a culture of inclusivity at workplaces.
Data and methods
The project includes the following sections:
- A mapping section in which we conduct a survey for people who belong to a neurominority about their work life experiences and needs.
We will also carry out interviews at workplaces where operational methods and practices have already been developed and implemented in order to take neurodiversity into account.
- Development workshops that will be carried out for workplaces participating in the project. The workshops allow workplaces to develop solutions and practices to promote the recruitment and support neurodivergent employees by developing solutions targeted at their needs.
- A communications section to formulate and disseminate concrete tools and the data gathered in the project for the use of workplaces and relevant partners. A key output of the project is a free-of-charge Neurodiversity Toolkit online material.
Results and impact
The project aims to influence the way people who belong to a neurominority manage to find employment and stay at work, enhance employee well-being and work ability, ensure equal opportunities for participation in work life, and prevent discrimination.
In addition, workplaces are made aware of sustainability issues, such as promoting an equal and equitable operating culture. In addition to workplaces, other collaborators will also benefit from the information the project produces.
The project’s outputs and results will be disseminated nationwide.
Let’s make neurodiversity a new resource in work life!
