Objectives

Shortage of workforce is increasingly posing challenges for healthcare and social services organisations, and recruitment of personnel from abroad is becoming more and more common. Therefore, organisations in this field need to develop their competence in recruiting and receiving  employees from abroad. For successful and ethically sustainable recruitment, it is crucial that workplaces are inclusive, and all employees are able to become full-fledged members of their work communities.

The project focuses on investigating the process of inclusion of employees recruited from abroad into their work communities in three public healthcare and social services organizations operating in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. It also examines the factors that affect this process. By utilising research and co-creation methods, an operating model will be developed to assist healthcare and social services organisations in promoting inclusive practices and policies in increasingly diverse workplaces.

The project aims to

  1. through research increase knowledge and understanding about the process by which employees recruited from abroad are included into work communities, as well as the factors that affect this process.
  2. identify existing best practices within the organisations and explore new approaches to support workplace inclusion.
  3. develop an operating model for healthcare and social services organisations to promote successful recruitment from abroad, taking into account the perspectives of both the employees and the organizations hiring them.

Data and methods

Adopting an ethnographic approach, the project will conduct a multi-perspective and multi-data case study on the inclusion of employees recruited from abroad into the work community.

In addition, the project will include an interview study, which involves interviewing employees recruited from abroad as well as experts and key personnel of the partner organisations and their stakeholders.

The operating model to be developed will be based on the research findings and co-creation carried out with the target organisations

Results and impact

The project will provide new information about the process of inclusion into work communities for employees recruited from abroad, as well as factors that either facilitate or hinder the process.

The resulting operating model will provide support for healthcare and social services organisations in successfully recruiting from abroad and fostering inclusivity within their work communities.
