Using AI to promote health and safety in shift work

Objectives
The aim of the project is to produce knowledge and recommendations
- for workplaces and occupational health care services on using AI to promote health and safety in shift work now and in the near future
- for the developers of AI-assisted digital solutions for taking the special features of shift work into account in planning and implementation.
Research questions
What opportunities do workplaces and occupational health care have to utilise AI-assisted solutions now and in the near future for
- developing working hours?
- promoting the health behaviour of shift workers?
- treating shift workers’ insomnia?
What possibilities do workplaces and occupational health care services have to use AI to produce comprehensive solutions that simultaneously promote
- health and safety in the working hours of shift work?
- shift workers’ health behaviour?
- the treatment of insomnia if necessary?
Data and methods
The project will involve some 20 experts representing workplaces, occupational health care, software companies developing digital solutions and developers of digital treatments for insomnia.
The project will collect interview data with a semi-structured interview method. A workshop method will be used subsequently to produce scenarios, i.e. visions on the concrete utilisation of AI in shift work.
The production of scenarios is divided into the following steps:
- identifying the main drivers of the the future
- describing visions and the developments leading to them
- assessing scenarios
- solutions and recommendations derived from scenarios.
Results and impact
The results of the project will help
- workplaces and occupational health care services to make effective, secure and ethical use of AI.
- developers of AI-based products to better meet the needs of workplaces and their occupational health care services.
