The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health will no longer carry out indoor climate surveys

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health stopped conducting indoor climate surveys in June 2026. Indoor climate surveys were used to survey the hazards and symptoms experienced by the users of premises such as offices, schools, day care centres and health care facilities as part of an overall survey of the status of indoor climate.

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health decided to discontinue the Indoor Climate Survey © service, as its importance decreased with the increasing understanding of the multifactorial nature of symptoms and indoor air situations.

The conditions of a building and possible problems with its indoor environment are primarily assessed by studying the building and its conditions. A user survey can be used to support these studies, due to the importance of the users of the premises being heard and involved in the process.

A user survey provides information on the observations and experiences of the users of the premises related to factors such as the maintenance, cleaning, usability of the premises and working conditions.

A user survey should not include any questions regarding symptoms or other health information. A survey alone cannot be used to draw conclusions about the condition of the building or the existence of an indoor environment problem. The objectives, content and appropriateness of the survey must be carefully assessed in advance.

It is a good idea to discuss the views and possible concerns of the users of the premises at the workplace together with indoor air experts and other stakeholders involved in resolving the situation.

If it is necessary to identify the symptoms and health situation of the users of the premises, this must be done by healthcare professionals, such as the occupational health care. At the same time, it should be noted that information regarding symptom does supplement the overview of users’ well-being and overall situation. However, it cannot be used to assess the conditions of the building or the existence of a potential problem with the indoor environment.Työterveyslaitos päätti luopua Sisäilmastokysely© palvelusta, sillä sen merkitys osana sisäilmatilanteiden selvittelyä on vähentynyt, kun tieto sisäilmaan liitettyjen oireiden ja sisäilmatilanteiden monitekijäisyydestä on lisääntynyt.
