What is algorithmic management?

Algorithmic management refers to a management system in which the responsibility for making and implementing any decisions affecting the workforce is handed over to algorithms, which limits human participation and supervision in the work process.

For employees, algorithmic management typically involves more negative than positive effects. However, with proper planning, it is possible to mitigate the negative effects and increase the positive effects.

Timetable

3/2024–12/2025

Objectives, data and methods

The project’s objective is to provide occupational health care professionals, in particular, with information about the effects of algorithmic management on occupational health and safety.

In the first phase (3–12/2024), we will analyse the literature and existing data sets on algorithmic management. We will draw up reports on the basis of the analyses and communicate the results in social media. We will also use the results in the planning of the second phase (2025).

Results and impact

The project will yield two primary outputs:

  • A literary review of the effects of algorithmic management on occupational health and safety
  • A report on the status of algorithmic management in Europe
