Get Working-Age People Moving

There is an obvious need to promote physical activity in the population. This project promotes physical activity and work ability competence through a wide range of methods. To support work ability, the project aims to reform structures and create effective measures for workplaces, various levels of the education system and occupational health services. The key target group is people who do not get enough exercise. The project is part of the implementation of the Get Finland Moving programme.

Objectives

The Get Working-Age People Moving project is part of the implementation of the Get Finland Moving programme, which is part of the Government Programme. The aim of the project is to improve the functional capacity and work ability of the working-age population and to increase exercise and work ability competence in work life, at different levels of the education system and in health care services.

The aim is to promote physical activity in the population through structural changes in work life that extend to workplaces. The focus is on people who do not get enough exercise or whose work ability is at risk. The measures also support the alertness, well-being and recovery of all people of working age.

The Get Working-Age People Moving project consists of two parts, each with two sets of measures. Each set of measures has its own goals. However, the project forms one synergistic whole. 

Project structure

Part 1:
Making exercise and work ability a part of health care service's range of measures, secondary and higher education and adult education:

  1. Building exercise coordinator training
  2. Developing occupational health care operations and the occupational health co-operation between the workplace and the occupational health care provider to promote exercise

Part 2:
Measures to increase physical activity in work life:

  1. Promoting exercise through dialogue
  2. Promoting exercise through leadership development and peer learning

Results and impact

The project’s measures promote physical activity, alertness, well-being and recovery. This means that they will support the work ability of all people of working age.

The project's results will include:

  • Online exercise coordinator training that is open to all. The training includes a training module for occupational health care professionals and experts.
  • An occupational health co-operation model for promoting exercise that includes good practices for individuals and work communities and for occupational health co-operation.
  • A future dialogue model for drawing up plans for measures to promote physical activity at the workplace and network level.
  • An information package on the importance, assessment and promotion of physical fitness
  • Good practices for promoting physical activity in different industries and workplaces
  • An online information package, which presents all tools and methods in one place
  • A wide range of communications, influencing and tools for workplaces and home offices and to support decision-making.

The project's measures will have an effect on the following:

  • Improving the functional capacity and work ability of the working-age population
  • Increasing exercise and improving work ability competence in the working-age population, especially among those who are offered physical activity counselling
  • Increasing the range of means of providing health care services
  • Diversification of the educational offering at different levels of the education system
  • Including exercise promotion in occupational health co-operation more often
  • Supporting the change of workplace management practices to promote exercise
  • Improving the co-operation between different operators
